Introduction:-                                               ‘A Pastoral Messiah’

In autumn 2009, ‘Unexpected Opera’ performed a unique semi-staged version of Handel’s Messiah in four beautiful churches
in Kent. The production was such a success that it is being repeated with four partner organisations to bring it to life once
again, with an even greater level of community involvement – but this time in four churches in Surrey including our very own
Mickleham Choral Society in St Michael’s church.

‘A Pastoral Messiah’ is set in rural England in the early 19th-century. In this adaptation, the story of the Savior has deep personal
significance for the local Squire and his farming tenants alike. A traditional Anglican parson and a charismatic Methodist preacher
tend to the troubled relationships amongst their flocks.

With the soloists in character, a costumed ensemble as the villagers, a large chorus (MCS) joining for the big moments, and the
audience invited to join in at points, we create a communal experience akin to the Medieval Mystery plays. The performance is
 accompanied by organ and trumpet.

The members of MCS will learn and perform a certain number of the major choruses in their local performance, with an element
of staging and an involvement in the story.
